The fifth meeting of the search committee on formation of
new Election Commission (EC) will be held on Saturday (February 19) at 11 am.
Secretary of the Coordination and Reforms Branch of the Cabinet Division
Mohammad Samsul Arefin said this.
The fourth meeting of the search committee was held on
February 16. On the same day, Secretary Mohammad Samsul Arefin told reporters
that an inquiry is underway to form an EC following the qualifications
prescribed in the law.
Earlier, the search committee held a meeting with 47
prominent citizens of different classes and professions in four phases on
Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday. The names of 322 candidates from registered
political parties, professional organizations and individuals were released on
Monday night. However, the names of the proposers were not disclosed.
Note that the term of the last EC ended last Monday,
February 14. This is the first EC to be formed according to the law after
independence. For this, on January 27, the appointment of Chief Election
Commissioner and other Election Commissioners Bill-2022 was passed in the
Parliament. A six-member inquiry committee headed by Justice Obaidul Hasan of
the Appellate Division was formed on February 5 to select the person eligible
to form the EC as per the law. The committee has been given 15 working days to
recommend names along with the President.
