‘Masud Rana’ controversy finally ends

The High Court has ruled that Abdul Hakim owns 260 books of the popular 'Masud Rana' series by Sheba Prokashoni, not Kazi Anwar Hossain. At the same time, the authors of 50 books in the 'Kuasha' series have been instructed to seize their rights.

A High Court bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir passed the verdict on Monday (December 13).

Barrister ABM Hamidul Misbah was in favor of the writ petition. Lawyers Khurshid Alam Khan and Iftabul Kamal Ayan represented the copyright office. Assistant Attorney General Nasim Islam Raju represented the state.

On December 9, a hearing was held on the decision issued by the Copyright Office in favor of Sheikh Abdul Hakim as the author of 260 books in the popular ‘Masud Rana’ series and 50 books in the ‘Kuasha’ series.

On July 29, 2019, Sheikh Abdul Hakim filed a complaint with the Bangladesh Copyright Office against Kazi Anwar Hossain, the proprietor of Sheba Prakashani, for violating sections 71 and 89 of the Bangladesh Copyright Act, claiming ownership of 260 books in the Masud Rana series and 50 in the Kuasha series.

After more than a year of legal battles, the Bangladesh Copyright Office ruled in favor of Sheikh Abdul Hakim on June 14 last year

Author Kazi Anwar Hossain filed a writ petition in the High Court challenging the validity of this decision. On September 10, 2020, the High Court issued a stay order on the preliminary hearing of the writ petition.
